German plays an important role in our thriving Languages Department, offering students the opportunity to study the language of one of Europe’s most culturally rich and economically significant countries.
In German lessons, students discover a language known for its logical structure and expressive precision. Through interactive discussion, authentic listening materials and a wide range of digital resources, students steadily build confidence in communicating in German. As with all languages in the department, the curriculum is organised around the three key pillars of language learning — grammar, phonics and vocabulary. Drawing on recent developments in modern language pedagogy, learning is carefully sequenced so that students develop secure foundations and increasing confidence across listening, speaking, reading and writing. German’s clear patterns and structures make it both intellectually rewarding and highly satisfying for students to learn.
In Year 7, students study two languages from French, German and Spanish, with three lessons per fortnight in each. This enables students to explore multiple languages while developing key linguistic skills.
In Year 8, students may either continue with the two modern languages studied in Year 7 or opt to begin Latin, continuing with one modern foreign language alongside it. This flexible structure allows students to personalise their pathway while continuing to deepen their language knowledge.
At Key Stage 4, students may choose to study one or more languages, reflecting both our commitment to linguistic excellence and the diverse interests of our pupils. Italian is also available as an additional option for particularly enthusiastic linguists. In the Sixth Form, we offer A Level courses in Spanish, French and German, enabling students to pursue advanced linguistic and cultural study.
A particular strength of our department is our German language assistant, who works with us for six months each year. The assistant leads small-group speaking sessions across all key stages, helping students develop fluency, spontaneity and authentic pronunciation, and also runs extra-curricular cultural sessions exploring life in the German-speaking world.
Students studying German also have the opportunity to experience the language beyond the classroom. Our Year 9 visit to the Rhineland allows students to explore the culture, history and landscapes of western Germany while developing confidence in using the language in real-life situations.
