French is a central part of our dynamic Languages Department, taught by specialist teachers who bring deep subject knowledge and enthusiasm for French and Francophone culture to their teaching.
Students studying French encounter one of the world’s most influential international languages and explore the diverse cultures of the Francophone world. Lessons combine interactive discussion, authentic listening materials and carefully selected digital resources to build confidence and engagement. As in all our languages, the curriculum is built around the three core pillars of language learning — grammar, phonics and vocabulary. Inspired by recent developments in language pedagogy, learning is carefully sequenced so that students steadily develop confidence and competence across listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are encouraged from the outset to communicate clearly and accurately while developing an appreciation for the richness and global reach of French culture.
In Year 7, students study two languages from French, German and Spanish, with three lessons per fortnight in each. This approach enables students to experience more than one modern language and develop strong language-learning foundations.
In Year 8 and 9, students may either continue with the two modern languages studied in Year 7 or opt to begin Latin, continuing with one modern foreign language alongside it. This flexible pathway allows students to shape their linguistic studies while continuing to deepen their understanding of language.
At Key Stage 4, students may choose to study one or more languages, reflecting both our commitment to linguistic excellence and the diverse interests of our pupils. Italian is also available as an additional option for particularly enthusiastic linguists. In the Sixth Form, we offer A Level courses in Spanish, French and German, allowing students to pursue advanced linguistic and cultural study.
Our department also benefits from a French language assistant who works with us for six months each year. The assistant leads small-group speaking sessions across all key stages, helping students develop fluency and confidence in spoken communication, and also runs extra-curricular cultural sessions that broaden students’ understanding of the French-speaking world.
Students of French are encouraged to engage with the culture and heritage of France beyond the classroom. This is supported through our popular Year 8 visit to Normandy, where students can experience French history, culture and daily life while practising their language skills.
