OCR

Why Choose Latin?

This course has been designed to give you an understanding of ancient Roman history, literature and beliefs. It helps you to further improve your Latin translation and comprehension skills, whilst advancing your range of vocabulary knowledge.

Not only will you gain a greater understanding of the legacy of the ancient world, you will also acquire knowledge and skills which will help you to become a good problem solver and critical thinker.

What is Involved?

You will learn vocabulary and grammatical constructions in accordance with the subject specification. You will be expected to translate unseen passages of Latin into English and answer comprehension questions. You will study one verse set text (Virgil, Aeneid 8) and one prose set text (Cicero, Pro Milone). If you choose to study just the AS qualification, you will complete an examination at the end of Year 12. There are two papers:

  • Language (01) Unseen Latin Prose, tested by translation and a comprehension passage (1 hour 30 mins)
  • Literature (02) Latin Verse and Prose Literature, tested by comprehension questions

In Year 13, you will learn vocabulary and grammatical constructions in accordance with the A-level specification. You will be expected to translate unseen prose and verse passages of Latin into English and scan the metre of lines of poetry. In addition to the set texts covered in Year 1, you will study one verse set text (Ovid, Heroides) and one prose set text (Tacitus, Annals 1). At the end of Year 13, there will be four papers:

  • Unseen Translation (01) Unseen Latin Prose and Verse passages, tested by Scansion of two lines of Verse metre (1 hour 45 mins)
  • Comprehension (02) Unseen Latin Prose and Verse passages, tested by comprehension (1 hour 15 mins)
