Shaping Futures

The West Kirby Grammar School Shaping Futures Programme is a social mobility initiative that works in partnership with Skyward Kids Life Skills to further equal opportunities in local communities to support, inspire and empower primary school students. It is a three-year programme which students complete in years 4 - 6.

The Shaping Futures programme is dedicated to providing Key Stage 2 academic support as well as challenge to complement the work done in primary school to foster resilience and a lifelong love of learning.

At the start of the programme each year 4 student will be assigned two Sixth Form mentors to work with as we aim to provide consistency in all sessions for the year 4s.

The programme focuses on Core Maths, Core English, wellbeing activities, extracurricular opportunities, tips and advice to help prepare students for the transition to secondary school and 11+ support. Students will work through the programme at the right speed for them as they are supported by their two personal mentors.

Students will be set challenges each week by their mentors in all of the areas outlined above and will be rewarded as they earn stickers for their record book. Students will have access to a mixture of examples and short videos to support the work done with the mentors and students’ progress with be tracked using the Skyward Kids online platform where students will take short online quizzes.

The Core Maths and English elements of the programme focus on key topics such as times tables, mathematical operations, fractions, basic algebra, spelling, vocabulary, prefixes and comprehension and the wellbeing challenges focus on the importance of topics such as getting moving, eating healthy, positive relationships and sleep.
