Full-time, Permanent. Required for January 2024

The Governors of this exceptional Grammar School wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Maths for January 2024. The post is full-time. The ability to teach GCSE Maths is essential and A-Level Maths is desirable. A strong degree in Maths is sought, although candidates with a degree in a closely related discipline are welcome to apply. This post would suit a newly or recently qualified teacher, for whom extensive support and encouragement will be given, or a more experienced practitioner.

The Maths Department at WKGS is a vibrant, exciting place to work and a place for all students to develop their Maths skills in order to achieve their best in this subject. They work in a suite of rooms and are a hard-working team who offer drop-in support sessions and a range of extracurricular opportunities at lunchtimes in the Maths Department, where staff encourage students to explore their love of Maths and consolidate their learning further and improve their confidence. The department promotes thinking skills and confidence in the subject and, as a result, the popularity of A-level Maths and Further Maths has grown significantly. At GCSE level, results are excellent with 45% of all grades being at grades 9-7 and 72% of all grades being at grades 9-6. A significant percentage of the cohort also successfully complete the Further Mathematics GCSE.

Students follow a two-year KS4 at WKGS and all students aspire to being entered for the Higher Tier for Edexcel Maths. At Key Stage 5, the Edexcel courses in Maths and Further Maths are followed and classes are usually shared between two teachers, with topics allocated according to areas of specialism. At Key Stage 3, a Maths Mastery program is followed using a variety of practical and visual resources and there is a real commitment in the department to improving the mastery of the rules of Maths in order to promote confidence and resilience in the subject. This fundamental approach to teaching in Maths at Key Stage 3 is then built upon throughout Key Stage 4 and 5 studies. Students are encouraged to take part in activities outside of the classroom and regularly take part in the UKMT team and individual challenges and MEM challenges, plus university quiz competitions.

West Kirby Grammar School is a very successful selective girls’ school with a coeducational Sixth Form. There are over 1200 students on roll and results are exceptional. At A-level, 66% of grades where A*-B with the average grade achieved being a B.
