Sunday Times School Guide 2022
We are delighted that West Kirby Grammar School has been named in the top 10 North West state schools and top 100 nationally in the Sunday Times School Guide 2022.
Bebras Challenge 2021
Team WKGS have achieved an amazing 117 Distinction and 107 Merit awards in the Bebras Challenge 2021. 84 students also achieved Gold Award, putting them in the top 10% of scores nationally. We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements – well done!
Psychology trip to London
A group of our Year 12 Psychology students experienced a two day trip to London visiting the Freud Museum, the Clink Museum and taking part in a Jack the Ripper walking tour on the first day. Followed by a hypnosis session, a trip on the London Eye and a visit to the London Dungeons! Two extremely action packed days and thoroughly enjoyed by all!
Our smart new school minibus has arrived on site-proudly displaying our WKGS logo and painted in our school colours! It will be used extensively especially for Geography fieldtrips and PE Tournaments. Look out for it around and about!
Under 13 Football teams
Well done to our two U13 football teams who were 2nd and 3rd in the Utilita Energy EFL Girls’ Cup Final, narrowly missing out after a last minute goal from the opposition!
BMC Youth Climbing Series success
Congratulations to Jessica (Y9) who was placed 3rd in the Welsh round of the BMC Youth Climbing Series. She will now represent Wales in the finals in Southampton later this month. A marvellous achievement!

Contribution to AQA guide
Congratulations to our former Sixth Form student, Acacia, whose work has been chosen by AQA to demonstrate good technique in practical Science work for their online training course; designed to support Science teachers’ understanding of the assessment and monitoring process.
Christmas Food Hamper Appeal for the Charles Thompson Mission
Our incredibly generous WKGS Community have donated food collected during our Harvest Festival week to the Charles Thompson's Mission Christmas Food Hamper Appeal. Thank you to everyone who contributed and especially to those who helped sort and pack the donations.

Year 11 GCSE Geography Fieldwork trip to Cumbria, County Durham
As part of their GCSE Geography course Year 11 Geographers enjoyed their fieldtrip to the Lake District, Cumbria looking at flood prevention techniques in Cockermouth and also woodland ecosystems. They then moved on to the Pennines into County Durham to follow the course of the River Tees from source to the sea. Followed by a wonderful set of opportunities to study the coastal landscape of the fast-eroding Holderness coast in Yorkshire, visiting Hornsea and Flamborough Head.
A level Fashion & Textiles Study Day in London
Our A level textiles students had the exciting opportunity of a trip to London to visit the world-renowned Fashion Rooms at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the newly built, highly innovative Design Museum. They particularly enjoyed the Sneakers Unboxed exhibition at the Design Museum!
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award
Congratulations to our 34 Year 12 and 13 students who took part in their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition in October 2021.
Year 9 GCSE Drama students visit to Liverpool
Year 9 Drama students took part in a visit to the Liverpool Everyman or Playhouse theatres for a backstage tour, a workshop with Tmesis, a Liverpool-based professional theatre company, followed by an evening performance of ‘Dracula’ at the Liverpool Playhouse. It was an excellent opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and understanding of theatre, working as a team with other Drama students and, as part of their GCSE course, students need to write about live theatre and watching ‘Dracula’ provided a valuable opportunity to discuss, analyse and evaluate a professional performance.
Folder upcycling project with Viavi Solutions
Well done to all our students who took part in the folder upcycling project with used Viavi branded folders. Rather than waste the folders we asked our students to upcycle and customise the folders with their own creative designs.
Congratulations to our Year 10 student Sophia who has been selected for Merseyside County Schools’ FA U16 squad and the Manchester Thunder U15 Netball pathway! Amazing achievement!
Merseyside Schools’ Cross County Race
Congratulations to all our students who took part in the Merseyside Schools’ Cross Country Race in Arrowe Country Park on Saturday 2 October 2021. The next round for the County is on Wednesday 13 October 2021 at Glasspool Playing Fields and, if successful in this round, the team will progress to the Regional finals on Saturday 13 November 2021! Good luck and well done to all involved!
Wirral schools placed eighth in national ranking
Wirral offers some of the best chances in country for an outstanding school place. The Wirral Globe has published an article, following research from the mortgage broker Mojo Mortgages, which states that new data has revealed that pupils across the Wirral have some of the best chances in the country of securing an outstanding primary or secondary school place. Guinness World Record title – Heroes Stamp Design Competition
Congratulations to all WKGS Art students who participated in the Heroes Stamp Design Competition – we are now part of a Guinness World Record! We were delighted to take part in the Royal Mail’s Competition in May 2021 which honoured the heroes of the coronavirus pandemic.

We were delighted to see many parents/carers actually in school, at last, for our Year 9 GCSE Information Evening on Wednesday 8 September 2021. Lateral Flow Asymptomatic Testing at West Kirby Grammar School
We are all set up and prepared once again to start Lateral Flow Asymptomatic testing many of our 1200+ students, twice, for the new school year. We are looking forward to welcoming all the WKGS Community back together for the start of another exciting year!

Virtual 11+ familiarisation
Our Year 12 Further Maths students hosted the first in our series of Virtual 11+ Familiarisation sessions for Year 5 pupils on Saturday 26 June 2021. Thanks to the Maths students and staff for all of their hard work in making this possible. BASE Competition National Finalists
Congratulations also go to Soraya, Heather, Lucy and Daria in Year 12 as they have achieved a place in the National Finals of the BASE Competition run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
Business Language Champions ‘Operation Language'
Well done to our Year 12 linguists in French, German and Spanish who took part in the Business Language Champions ‘Operation Language’ challenge last week. They used their language skills to great effect in this national event, working on a World Health Organisation theme.
WKGS shepherdess stars on Steph’s Packed Lunch
Year 8 student Esther appeared on ‘Steph’s Packed Lunch’ on Channel 4 with Steph McGovern on Tuesday 27 April 2021 talking about her passion and responsibility for with her flock of rare breed sheep Greyface Dartmoors.
Perse Coding Competition
Congratulations to our Year 11 students Hannah, Emily and Hadiza who recently represented the school in round 2 of the Perse Coding competition. The team performed superbly, gaining a Certificate of Merit each. Well done!
Meet the Professions
We have held another fantastic 'Meet the Professionals' session with Lucy Sibbick, an award-winning special effects make-up artist. She is best known for her work on the film Darkest Hour for which she was awarded, with Kazuhiro Tsuji and David Malinowski, the BAFTA award in 2017 and the Academy Award in 2018 for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

We hosted another ‘Meet the Professionals’ event with Celyn Jones, the critically acclaimed and award-winning actor and screenwriter, who provided a fascinating talk which was greatly enjoyed by our students. Well done to all who attended and a massive thank you to Celyn for the time, support, inspiration and advice. WKGS film company may be on its way!
Duke of Edinburgh Awards volunteering
We are very proud of our students who are undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award training for contributing to 5863 hours of voluntary service to the local community during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vitality Netball Super League
Natalie (Year 10) has been selected for the Severn Stars U17 National Performance League squad. Severn Stars play in the Vitality Netball Super League. Our congratulations to Natalie on a fantastic achievement!
Meet the Professionals
WKGS Drama department hosted another Meet the Professionals session this week with Eli Randle from Tmesis Theatre. It was brilliant to hear about the work of a director and theatre-maker. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and asked some fantastic questions. A huge thank you to Eli for her time and expertise.
UKMT Mathematics challenge
Well done to Year 12 student Rebekah for achieving a distinction in the recently completed an Olympiad challenge as part of the UKMT Mathematics challenge. She has also been selected as the reserve for the UK team in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad taking place in April. We are all incredibly proud and very impressed about how far she has progressed in the competition.

Medicine in Action Conference
Potential Medics Conference: WKGS Year 12 students were given the opportunity to take part in an online conference aimed at those wishing to study medicine at the next stage of their education. Twenty three students attended the virtual event on Tuesday 26 January 2021 from 9.30am until 12.30pm

As part of the A-level Human Geography regeneration project, Year 12 students took a trip to Liverpool to see first-hand regeneration in action along the Liverpool waterfront.

In November, 12 students from Years 10 -13 won the North-West Regional Heat of the UK Space Design Competition at the University of Liverpool.
Spanish Exchange 2018
Fifteen Year 11 GCSE Spanish students spent the last week of September with their Spanish exchange partners in Torrelavega in Cantabria in the North of Spain.
