Liverpool Families
A top-ranking state grammar school education
Bookings for our Year 4 & 5 Open Evening - April 2026 are now open
More families in Liverpool are choosing West Kirby Grammar School for their daughter’s secondary education — even without a dedicated transport service or targeted Liverpool marketing to support applications.
From September 2027, we plan to change that.
This page explains why WKGS is increasingly an excellent choice for Liverpool families, how Liverpool families can access the school, and what you need to know if your daughter may be joining us in September 2027.

Why Liverpool families are looking beyond Liverpool
Many aspirational families in Liverpool understandably place selective education at the top of their list of priorities, they don't always realise that we are more easily accessible than they think!
West Kirby Grammar School offers a compelling option:
- Selective grammar education
- Proven academic excellence
- Compassionate, caring community where your child belongs & is known
- Exceptional enrichment included as standard
- No tuition fees
Increasing numbers of Liverpool families are already making this choice.

Is West Kirby Grammar School realistic for Liverpool families?
Yes.
Each year, we welcome a growing number of students from Liverpool who travel independently or via existing public transport arrangements. From September 2027, our planned dedicated Liverpool–WKGS transport service will make the school an even more realistic and accessible option for families across South Liverpool.
Students who travel further distances settle quickly, build strong friendships, and are fully involved in school life.
Liverpool → WKGS dedicated transport (from September 2027)
We know that reliable transport is essential when choosing a secondary school.
For entry from September 2027, we are planning a dedicated school transport service from Liverpool to WKGS, subject to sufficient demand.
Indicative cost
- Estimated annual cost: £2,700
- Payment method: 10 monthly direct debit instalments of £270
- These figures are indicative and will be confirmed in February 2026, once the current transport tender process has been finalised.
This estimate is based on a vehicle carrying approximately 20 passengers. If demand is higher, we would expect the cost per passenger to reduce accordingly.
WKGS already has extensive experience of contracting and managing high-quality home-to-school transport services across Wirral, Chester, Ellesmere Port and North Wales.

Will distance affect my child’s experience?
No.
Many WKGS students already travel significant distances to attend the school. Our enrichment programme is carefully planned, with the vast majority of activities taking place at lunchtime, ensuring all students can take part regardless of transport arrangements.
Students from Liverpool quickly feel part of the WKGS community and thrive both academically and socially.
