The Computing department at West Kirby Grammar School consists of two specialist staff with both academic and industry experience in the subject. Computing lessons take place in modern, well-equipped computer suites, which make use of iTV interactive whiteboard technology.

At Key Stage 3, all pupils study Computing for one lesson per week. Topics include designing and interpreting algorithms, programming using the ‘Python’ programming language, data representation, website development, computer hardware, networks and mobile app development.

The department provides a good variety of extra-curricular activities such as a BBC Micro:bit programming club, lunchtime subject support drop in sessions and a Cyber Security club who take part in a national cyber security competition annually.

At Key Stage 4, pupils may study GCSE Computer Science. The subject covers areas such as cyber security, data structures and algorithms, computer networks, programming, computer architecture and the legal/moral/ethical issues in Computing.

The department has an excellent record of results with GCSE students achieving 56% 9-7 and 80% 9-6, while A-level students achieved 57% A*-A and 100% A*-C.
