KS4 Specification - AQA
The Physics department at West Kirby Grammar School consists of four teachers, who are all Physics specialists. At Key Stage 3, students study Physics for one lesson a week and study a variety of topics including energy, forces and motion, space, electricity and waves as well as developing their practical and analytical skills. Students develop their interest and enthusiasm in the physics of all that is around them. All students study for separate GCSE Physics at Key Stage 4. The number of students opting to study A-level Physics has grown over the last seven years, attracting two teaching groups each year.
The department is proud of its public examination results; with 61% achieving 9-7 and 83% achieving 9-6 at GCSE. At A-level, we have achieved 74% A*-B and 26% A* grades.
The Science Department has 12 fully-equipped laboratories, with state-of-the-art and fully interactive technology. We offer a large number of visits to enrich our curriculum, including a Key Stage 4 and 5 trip to NASA in Texas, a Key Stage 5 visit to CERN in Geneva and masterclasses at the University of Liverpool and Leicester Space Centre.

Eco-schools Global Citizenship School of the Year award
We are delighted that our Eco-Subcommittee has received the award from Keep Britain Tidy of Eco-Schools Global Citizenship School of the Year. Their work on the Wirral-wide TexPop26 event - a music and design competition which raises awareness about the environmental damage fast-fashion causes across the world and the promotion of the benefits of upcycled clothing has been outstanding. The school also won two awards at the Wirral event in the Future Yard: school band ‘The Room’ were named ‘Best Performing Group’, and the creators of their upcycled stage-clothes won the ‘Best Upcycled Clothing’ award. Eco-Schools is the world’s largest schools’ environmental programme and students taking part can learn about everything from litter and biodiversity to energy and global citizenship. We are proud to have been accredited with the Eco-Schools Green Flag.
