KS4 Specification - AQA

The Biology Department at West Kirby Grammar School consists of six teachers, who are all biology specialists. At Key Stage 3, students study Biology for one lesson a week and study a variety of topics including cells, tissues and organs, reproduction, respiration, photosynthesis and earth and the environment, as well as developing their practical and analytical skills. Students develop their interest and enthusiasm in the Biology of all that is around them. All students study separate Sciences at GCSE. A-level Biology has remained a very popular subject and has maintained consistently high numbers.

The department is proud of its public examination results with 87% achieving grades 9-6 at GCSE, 70% achieving grades 9-7 and 32% achieving grade 9. At A-level, we achieved 56% A* - B and 20% A*.

The Science Department has 12 fully-equipped laboratories, with state-of-the-art and fully interactive technology. We offer a large number of activities to enrich our curriculum, including field trips to Hilbre Island and Church Island, Year 7 Science Club, Nowgen, Leahurst Farm, Operation Theatre Live, Biology Olympiad, support sessions for students in all key stages and Science Evening lectures.

Rotary Club Shoebox Appeal

Thanks, once again, to the generosity of our students, the Rotary Club Shoebox Appeal was well supported. The scheme provides gifts for children and families in Eastern Europe, who live in very poor circumstances. Thank you to all those who spent time filling the boxes with such wonderful donations. The collection of the boxes coincided with Children in Need Day when students also made donations to that charity for a Non-Uniform Day!

Ogden Trust Science Fair at St George’s Primary School

Well done to our Year 11 students and Science Department teachers who took part in a Science Fair at St George’s Primary School in Wallasey. The Science Fair was a free event, launching the Wallasey Ogden Schools’ Partnership. The partnership of seven local schools (four primary, three secondary) promotes Science in their schools in a number of exciting projects funded by the Ogden Trust. At the Science Fair, the students demonstrated fun experiments to children and families and explained the science to them. This is called Science busking and is a great way to involve our students in sharing their enjoyment of science with others. Following on from this event, the Year 11 students now have the opportunity to run a Science Club at WKGS for Year 3 and 4 students for the Spring Term offering the primary school children the chance to earn a Science Crest Superstar Award.
