French forms part of our large, thriving Modern Languages department, led by specialist staff who share their expertise and enthusiasm for continental culture inside and outside of the classroom.
In French, students immerse themselves in the language of our closet neighbour through a range of modern digital and audio materials, and through interactive classroom discussion. In Year 7, all students benefit from three lessons of French per fortnight, alongside two lessons of German and two of Spanish. In Year 8 students are asked to indicate two preferred languages to continue studying and they receive four lessons per fortnight for each of these.
All students study at least one language in Key Stage 4 with Italian available as an additional option for our more able linguists. We also offer A-Level courses in French, Spanish and German.
We encourage all of our French students to immerse themselves in French culture and support this with a popular Year 8 trip to Normandy, and through extracurricular activities such as the Year 7 French Club.
