KS4 Specification - AQA

The chemistry department at West Kirby Grammar School consists of seven teachers, who are all chemistry specialists. At Key Stage 3, students study chemistry for one lesson a week which includes a variety of topics including acids and alkalis, states of matter, chemical reactions, elements, mixtures and compounds and reactivity. Students also have the opportunity to develop their practical and analytical skills, developing their interest and enthusiasm in the Chemistry of all that is around them. All students study separate sciences at GCSE level.

The department is proud of its public examination results. At GCSE 75% of students achieved grade 9-6 and 39% achieved grades 9-8. At A-level, 65% of students achieved A* - B and 100% achieved A* - E.

The Science Department has 12 fully-equipped laboratories, with state-of-the-art and fully interactive technology. We offer a large number of activities to enrich our curriculum, including the Chemistry Communicators Project (leading to a Gold Crest Award), university workshops, the Chemistry Analyst Competition, Chemistry Olympiad, the Year 7 Science Club, Salters Festival of Chemistry, Café Scientific, support sessions for students in all key stages and Science evening lectures.

Year 10 Drama visit to London

Year 10 Drama students enjoyed a visit to London in a sweltering July heatwave; taking part in a practical workshop, led by professional practitioners, on performance skills and approaches to text. The same evening they watched 'Jack Absolute Flies Again’, a production at the National Theatre starring Caroline Quentin and Kelvin Fletcher. The following morning they took part in a guided tour of the National Theatre, seeing backstage, before travelling to the Fortune Theatre, near Drury Lane to see the matinee production of ‘Woman in Black’ - all were suitably scared!
