Careers

Welcome to our Careers area

At West Kirby Grammar School we offer all our students an inclusive programme of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance. Our CEIAG programme includes one-to-one guidance interviews, group sessions, and guest speakers; plus, targeted activities both in and outside of school. Students also have access to Careers information as part of Personal Development lessons in all key stages.  Students and staff have access to Unifrog, a platform which is used to help them make the best choices and submit the strongest applications.

West Kirby Grammar School is part of the Liverpool Careers Hub and is committed to working towards the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Careers Guidance.

The Careers Leader is Mrs Kirsty Kimber. If you have any queries about careers or progression, please contact [email protected] or call via the school’s contact details

The school commission our Careers, education, information, advice and guidance through Career Connect.  Our allocated Careers advisor is Ruth Evans.  To contact her please email: [email protected] . An individual careers interview is arranged for all Year 11 students and our Year 12 and 13 students can request an interview when they feel it is most appropriate.

At West Kirby Grammar School there is a comprehensive programme of careers and guidance that commences in Year 7. We were the first school on the Wirral to be awarded the Connexions Careers and Guidance standard.

Wherever an individual’s talents or interests lie we endeavour to nurture every student so that they can follow their dream and maximise their potential.

A carefully constructed programme of guidance for GCSE options ensures that all students make informed choices and introduce students to female role models in a range of career areas, extending and opening the students’ eyes to careers they might not have thought of previously.

At West Kirby Grammar School we fully appreciate the importance of making good choices after GCSEs. Our Year 10 Taster Day and Year 11 Opportunities Day gives an excellent insight into Sixth Form courses. The curriculum gallery gives our Year 11 students the chance to speak to Sixth Form students who are already studying subjects they may be interested in.

The biennial Careers Convention is very popular with our senior students. It is an excellent way to talk with employers and representatives from a wide range of universities. More recently our Year 10s have enjoyed attending an external Careers Event organised by Careers Connect

Sixth Form guidance is excellent. Support is tailormade to support each student individually. Our Summer Programme in Year 12 helps ensure that our students are well prepared for the next stage of their education. We provide a range of workshops on personal statements and finance delivered by local universities, as well as visits to higher education institutions. There are also seminars for parents/carers and students on Oxbridge applications, finance and prospective medics.  Students are well-informed about apprenticeships as an excellent alternative to university.

Work experience is a key element of our careers and guidance programme. Students in Year 10 and Year 12 enjoy spending a week at placements in a wide range of occupational areas.
