During Activities Week both Year 10 and Year 12 took part in a week of work experience, to enable them to sample possible career choices. Pupils self-placed and benefitted from accessing a variety of different professions, such as hospitals, veterinary practices, solicitors, barristers, the police, accountants, architects, photographers, theatre companies, primary schools, engineering firms, hotels, banks, opticians, dentists, department stores, marketing firms, digital designers, nurseries, health and fitness clubs, garden centres, dog groomers, stables, GP surgeries, HR departments…….to list but a few!
Throughout the week, staff visited or contacted providers, to ensure that the pupils were making the most of this valuable experience.
The feedback given was incredibly positive. Providers were delighted at how enthusiastic and proactive the pupils at West Kirby Grammar School are. I have received so many delightful comments outlining how engaging and motivated the students were, all displaying a genuine interest in the placement. Pupils felt that they were given responsibility in their roles, which helped them to become more independent and resilient.
Several pupils have also been offered part-time / temporary summer positions within the business, as a result of their hard work and commitment during the week.
A higher percentage of pupils travelled out of area to access placements this year, some as far as Manchester, Staffordshire, North Wales, Chester, London, Portsmouth and even out of the UK to Germany.
Many of the students have been enlightened by their placement, gaining a real sense of the world of work, which has given them a more defined direction for their future.
Here is a small selection of some of the many positive comments from placement providers:
“……has been polite, punctual and an important team member in the past week…..we would be happy for her to join the team again in the future for further work experience”
“….has an excellent attitude, I wish her luck in the future.”
“It has been a pleasure to have her with us this week. She has proven to be reliable, very caring and mature. She uses her initiative and will be an asset to whichever profession she chooses.”
“…..has been amazing with the children and staff. She has used her own initiative and has been an asset to us.”
Here is just a small selection of comments from the pupils regarding their placements:
“I have really enjoyed this week and carried out a lot graphic design work with a variety of programmes. I’ve developed my skills a lot and I’m really happy with what I have achieved.”
“I have really enjoyed my experience and I am looking forward to doing future work experiences. They have really looked after me”
“I have had a great time and enjoyed the work I was doing”
On behalf of the school, we would like to thank all of the providers for their time and effort in providing such a rich and varied selection of placements for our pupils.
