Head of Department : Mrs L Marley
The Chemistry department at West Kirby Grammar School consists of six teachers, who are all chemistry specialists. At Key Stage 3, students study chemistry for one lesson a week and study a variety of topics including acids and alkalis, states of matter, chemical reactions, elements mixtures and compounds, reactivity and rocks, as well as developing their practical and analytical skills. Students develop their interest and enthusiasm in the chemistry of all that is around them. Most students (4 - 5 groups) opt for separate GCSE Chemistry and some (3 groups) study Chemistry as part of their GCSEs in Science and Additional Science. A-level Chemistry has remained a very popular subject and has maintained consistently high numbers over the last five years.
The department is proud of its public examination results. In 2016 we achieved: 91% A* - B at GCSE, At A-level, we have achieved 74% A* - B and 100% A* - E.
The Science Department has 12 fully-equipped laboratories, each with interactive whiteboards. We offer a large number of activities to enrich our curriculum, including field trips to Liverpool University for various workshops, University workshops in school, the chemistry analyst competition, chemistry Olympiad, the Year 7 Science Club and Salters Festival of Chemistry, Café Scientific, support sessions for students in all key stages and Science Evening lectures.
